Details
As executive members of the Western Persian Society and Iranian students at Western Sydney University, we would like to take this opportunity to shed light on the current events and protests in Iran.
On September 13, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested and died in the custody of the "morality police" of Iran for displaying a few strands of her hair which contradicted the strict Islamic dress code laws.
The killing of Mahsa Amini has sparked nationwide protests. The people are standing up against the totalitarian regime, chanting slogans such as "Women. Life. Freedom”. Most of the protests are led by young and brave Iranians in their early 20s and teenage years.
In response to the people’s demands for their most basic human rights like freedom of expression and women’s rights, the government forces have killed and imprisoned hundreds of protestors. The government has also cut off people’s internet in an attempt to cover the violence perpetrated against protestors without proper media coverage. The wounded protesters are rejected by the hospitals and are left with no choice but to look after their severe wounds with the most basic domestic equipment.
In these difficult and uncertain times, we must amplify the voices of the Iranian people. Let us use our freedom of speech to help the brave people, especially the brave women of Iran. Keeping in mind that this isn’t just a movement against a government. This is a movement that will be remembered and written in history as a courageous stand for women’s rights and freedoms.
The Western Persian Society hereby would like to invite Western Sydney University Students and Staff to join us for a solidarity vigil night on Tuesday October 4th on Level 1 at Parramatta city campus from 6.00pm to 7.00pm. All are welcome, please register here via WesternLife.
Please also join us by amplifying the voice of women in Iran by using the #Mahsa_Amini on social media.
Thank you.
