A little about this mentor:
My name is Maggie, and I'm a mature-aged student in my fourth year of the Bachelor of Social Work at Western Sydney University. I chose this degree because I'm passionate about supporting people through difficult times, advocating for those who feel unheard, and empowering individuals to take steps toward positive change. In the future, I'd love to work in aged care or community services, where I can offer practical support, compassion and dignity. I know systems aren't always perfect, but I hope to be someone who helps others feel seen, valued, and supported as they navigate them. Outside of my studies, I work full-time as a digital marketing specialist for a not-for-profit organisation, and I also volunteer as a facilitator for the English Conversation Group, helping students feel confident in speaking English. I understand how overwhelming uni can be, especially when you're managing work, volunteering, family, or other life commitments. I'm always happy to share tips and strategies that have helped me juggle these responsibilities, offer encouragement or just have a friendly chat. When I'm not working or studying, I enjoy walking my dog Daisy (she's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel), capturing everyday moments with my phone, watercolour painting, cooking healthy meals, and reading theology books. I also enjoy exploring new cafes and restaurants - It's one of my favourite ways to relax and catch up with friends. Daisy is the CEO of my study breaks - she reminds me to slow down and enjoy the small things, like taking a walk around the block or cuddling on the couch. As a mentor, I'm here to support you, whether you've got questions, need help finding services, or just want to feel more connected. I'm looking forward to meeting you this semester.
Further Leadership Skills: Other I'm an English Conversation Group Facilitator with the Peer Programs team, where I lead weekly sessions to help international students build confidence in spoken English. This role has strengthened my group facilitation, cross-cultural communication, and leadership skills, and reflects my passion for creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels supported.
Parent or Carer: Pawrent
A little about their culture: I was born in Australia and come from a Chinese-Australian background, with family roots in Hong Kong. Growing up in a multicultural environment has helped me value both my cultural heritage and the rich diversity of Australian society. As a Christian, my faith shapes how I live - I value compassion, integrity, service, and community. I'm part of Campus Bible Ministries (CBM), a warm and welcoming space where students can explore faith, ask questions, and build genuine connections. Whether you're new to Christianity, curious, or looking to grow in your faith, you're always welcome at CBM.
