A little about this mentor:
Hi mates! Welcome to Western Sydney University! My name is YIPENG CHEN, and I am a second-year student studying for Master of Social Work. Inspired by both my studies and life experiences, I have a strong interest in supporting people facing difficulties, whether those challenges come from university or personal circumstances. I also have experience overcoming past difficulties. That is why I am participating in this Mentor program. Like many international students, I had some anxiety in my first half year about how to study a subject that was significantly different from my previous one, how to use university services, and how to establish a new social circle in a foreign country. I understand that the first year can be a confusing and stressful time for many new students, but as your mentor, I promise to support you in transitioning seamlessly into university life to the best of my ability. Oh, another thing I also want to share with you is that, as a big fan of nature and jogging, I have had good experiences using natural therapies to relieve stress. I like to share them with you if you need.
Further Leadership Skills: Peer Champ (Raising Integrity through Peer Leadership) During my first placement, I took a leadership role in coordinating individual tasks among team members to ensure effective collaboration and in promoting open interpersonal communication. During this period, I encouraged the team to identify overlooked and undervalued issues in our case analysis. I also advocated for dedicating additional time to interviewing the placement agency and organising peer-to-peer meetings to address the complex challenges we encountered.
A little about their culture: My culture and beliefs are mainly shaped by Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and materialist philosophy. That influences me to think about personal challenges at the family level and to place significant value on personal decision-making.
